Whether you're travelling for a photoshoot or heading to a client's location, lugging around a heavy makeup kit can be exhausting—not to mention unnecessary. However, packing light doesn’t mean sacrificing quality or creativity; it just takes a bit of planning. Here are a few savvy ways to lighten your load while staying fully prepared on the job.

Opt for Multi-Use Products

Versatility is your best friend when you're on the go. Cream products that can be used on eyes, lips and cheeks are brilliant space-savers. A good brow gel might double as mascara, and many lip liners can also be used around the eyes. Please check the manufacturers website before putting your client at risk. Next time you pack up your kit, choose products with flexible finishes and buildable coverage so you’re ready for anything.

Travel Sizes Over Full-Size Bottles

While that litre of setting spray might be your holy grail, travel-sized products or professional miniatures are far more practical. They’ll lighten the weight your kit and leave room for more variety. Many pro brands offer travel sizes specifically for artists, and they’re perfect for short-term gigs or touch-up kits.

Decant and De-pot Smartly

Alternatively to buying the travel sizes, you can also decant your favourite liquids into smaller containers and palettes. For pressed powders, depotting into a customisable Z Palette allows you to carry only the shades you need—ideal for eyeshadows, blushes, contour powders and more. This not only saves weight but also helps with visibility and accessibility on set.

Stay Organised With Smaller Bags

Instead of digging through a single massive kit, use smaller, clearly labelled pouches or bags to separate product categories—skin prep, complexion, lips, etc. It makes finding what you need quicker, keeps your work station tidy, and makes resetting between clients a breeze. I often opt for clear organisers as they are especially helpful for quickly scanning your supplies.

Always Carry Business Cards

After a successful shoot or glam session, someone’s bound to ask for your details or Instagram page. Keep a small stash of business cards in your set bag—easy to hand out, and a great way to turn one job into your next one. It’s a simple, low-effort way to stay top of mind.

Packing light is all about working smarter, not harder. A well-thought-out kit not only saves your back, but it also signals confidence and efficiency—qualities every great makeup artist should embody.
